New GME Professionals Workshop: Your Compass for the First Year is a six-month professional development experience designed to provide new GME professionals with the technical knowledge, practical resources, and operational foundation needed to navigate their roles with greater clarity and confidence.
The workshop will be offered in two six-month cycles, with one cohort meeting from January through June and a second cohort meeting from July through December. Participants will attend one interactive, two-hour session each month. Because the responsibilities and priorities of Graduate Medical Education change throughout the academic year, each cohort will focus on the fundamental topics, recurring processes, and seasonal responsibilities most relevant to that half of the academic cycle.
Throughout the workshop, participants will begin decoding the “alphabet soup” of GME while developing a clearer understanding of the organizations, terminology, requirements, systems, and processes that shape their work. Sessions will introduce important GME topics and annual milestones, help participants identify where to locate reliable information, and clarify how different responsibilities connect across the academic year.
The workshop will also emphasize practical organization and operational accountability. Participants will learn how to create effective checklists, establish appropriate checks and balances, anticipate recurring deadlines, and develop systems that support accuracy, consistency, and continuity within their programs. Rather than relying solely on inherited processes or learning through trial and error, participants will gain a framework for understanding both what needs to be done and why it matters.
Although all GME professionals are welcome, this workshop is specifically designed for individuals within their first year in Graduate Medical Education. Its focus on essential technical and foundational knowledge will help participants establish strong professional practices, better understand the GME environment, and build a reliable foundation for continued growth and long-term success.
